Humic to Break Down Thatch in Lawn

Humic acid is a wonderful soil conditioner for our soil. It breaks down organic matter and returns it to the soil making nutrients more available to plants. You can use it on the lawn this time of year as a substitute for power raking. Humic will help break down thatch and although it's not a fertilizer you will see your lawn green up due to nutrients being returned to the soil.

Roses are ready to be pruned back. Prune Hybrid Tea Roses down to 6 inches above the ground and climbing roses to 2 feet. Make your angled cut right above a new bud. After pruning is a great time to fertilize. We recommend Bill's Rose Food because it contains chelated iron and sulfur, both of which help to combat our high alkaline soil.

We now have our seed potatoes, onion sets, Walla Walla onion plants and asparagus roots. These can all be planted anytime now.

With beautiful weather in the forecast, Spring feels near. Before long tulips won't be the only thing sprouting so it's time to start thinking about applying pre emergent herbicide to prevent weeds. Turf & Ornamental Granules can be applied to the landscape or the lawn and will prevent seeds from germinating. It's a good idea to apply it once near the first of April and again near the first of June for continual coverage for the season.

We have onion sets and shallots available. These can be planted anytime now. Mix in peat moss or compost at the time of planting to help keep the soil loose, allowing for larger bulbs.

For those of you looking to get your garden started indoors, we are fully stocked with all our seed, soils and supplies. A good rule of thumb when starting tomato and pepper seeds indoors is to plant your seeds 6-8 weeks before you plan on moving them outside. Be sure they have plenty of light while indoors to prevent them from getting leggy.

Ever since Gary started his garden tips over 20 years ago, they had been placed in the Pueblo Chieftain. We appreciate the strong following these ads garnered over the years and still maintain today. However, in our opinion over the last several years our "local" paper has felt less and less "local." As of Spring 2024 we have decided to move our Garden Tips here to our website. There are a few sporadic posts from the past already here, but we will now be making weekly additions. We thank you for your interest and are looking forward to another year of lawn and garden care in Pueblo. For those of you curious about Gary, you may not see him in the store as often, but he still helps us out a lot during Spring and contributes to these Gardening Tips.

We have only heard of minor damage on bedding plants, but trees were slightly damaged. Trim any branches that are broken and spray a small amount of pruning sealer on the tree's fresh cut.

Just a reminder that if you applied a pre-emergence in mid March or April, it’s time to reapply this product to keep from getting weeds sprouting up later in the summer.

It is also time to reapply fertilizer to the lawn to help it keep that deep green color and to help thicken up the roots.

We still have a large selection of bedding plants. We received a large shipment of tomatoes, peppers plus many melons and cucumbers. Stop by and see the flowers that are available.

Also please note that we will be closed Monday for Memorial Day as well as Mondays moving forward. Have a great weekend.

The snowball bushes are blooming all over town right now, and they look amazing. If you haven’t noticed, look for the fairly large bushes with large white ball shaped blooms. They’re in nearly every neighborhood. These bushes are easy to care for, very hardy and get up to 12 feet tall and wide. We have plenty of them in stock if you want to add one to your landscape.

Spring blooming bushes like the snowball bush, lilacs and forsythia are best trimmed up right when they’re done blooming. Next year they will bloom on the growth they add this year, so pruning them in the fall would cost you some color next spring.

Hummingbirds and orioles have been in town for a while and they’re looking for nectar. We have a lot of different feeders to choose from to feed these interesting birds. Hummingbirds also love visiting our hanging baskets at the store. They’re favorites are petunias, fuschias and calibrachoa (million bells).

Now that we are safely past our average last frost date it’s time to get those veggie and flower starts in the ground. We still have a good supply of starter plants, including veggies, herbs, annual flowers and perennials.

If you’re getting ready to plant it’s always a good idea to freshen up the soil. The Organic Garden Soil from Ferti-lome is one of our favorites to mix into the ground or raised beds to give your plants a boost. It’s a dark, rich, peat moss mixed with earthworm castings and kelp meal. For clay soils, mixing in cotton burr compost is very effective. It is acidified to counter our high alkaline soil. Don’t forget to water your transplants with root stimulator to help prevent transplant shock and get the roots off to a fast start.

If you have unwanted grass creeping into your flower beds, spray with Ferti-lome over the top. This product will kill grasses without hurting your plants. For well established, tougher to kill grasses it can take 2 applications about a week apart

Roses are in stock and looking great, with many of them already in bloom. They come in a wide variety of colors to suit many tastes. Of course there’s the traditional red rose as well as orange, yellow, white, pink, purple and even bi-colored varieties. These are all grade 1 roses of the highest quality. The Riverwalk Rose Society will be here Saturday to answer rose questions and give planting tips.

Clematis has also arrived and we have 16 different varieties. These popular flowering vines come in shades of purple, pink, red, white and bi-colored varieties. They bloom best in full sun, but their roots prefer to stay a little cooler, so mulch well after planting.

If yours still has a few yellow patches, wait a couple more weeks before worrying too much. If you haven’t fertilized yet go ahead and put some down. Make sure you’re giving your lawn at least an inch of water a week. If you suspect grub damage, dig under the spots and if you have grubs they will be right under the roots. If you see grubs treat with dylox. If in 2-3 weeks you still have dead spots in your lawn you might have winter kill. Winter kill is typically caused by the long dry spells we have in the winter around here. These areas will need to be re-seeded.

Weeds are popping up along with everything else now. Ferti-lome Weed Free Zone is the best product to kill broadleaf weeds in the lawn, such as dandelions, bindweed and mustard. This product will not hurt your lawn and comes in ready to use or concentrated sizes.

Hi-Yield Killzall will kill the weeds in your driveway, rock and open areas. This product will kill anything that is already green and growing, but only kills what it touches. That means you can spray it near other plants and it won’t hurt them unless it gets on the leaves.

We are at peak selection right now for the economical 6-pack flower and veggie plants. If there’s something specific you’d like, now’s the best time to get it.

Our greenhouse is starting to fill up with veggie plants! We have a good selection of tomatoes and peppers in 6-packs. Annual flowers are starting to show up as well, including quite a few hanging baskets already. We will also be receiving a large order of herbs before the weekend. Remember to keep an eye on the forecast as a freeze will kill many of these plants. If you want to make sure you get the varieties of plants you want now, you can leave them in the pots and move them indoors at night until there’s no longer a chance of frost.

Peonies are an amazing, large flowered, long-lived perennial. They typically bloom heavily in late Spring or early Summer. We have five different varieties available now: red, yellow, white, soft pink and pink with a white ring. These peonies are in 2 gallon pots and are off to a nice start. Peonies like full sun and well draining soil. Planting peonies too deep can prevent them from blooming, so don’t plant them any deeper than they’ve been planted in the pot. Consider placing a peony ring around the plant before it gets too large to support the heavy blooms and prevent stem breakage.

The trees with white blossoms right now on Northern Ave are flowering pears, and we have three different varieties of them. Redspire, Cleveland and Capital Pear trees all get 35-40 feet tall, but have varying widths to suit different spaces. The Redspire gets 20 feet wide, the Cleveland 15-20 feet wide and the Capital just 12-15 feet wide. These trees grow in a natural pyramidal form, can handle poor soils and tolerate our summer heat well.

Now is a good time to start thinking about fertilizing your trees and shrubs. Jirdon Tree & Shrub Fertilizer is our favorite because it has a great formula for our region and encourages strong and steady growth. You want to spread the recommended amount around the dripline of the tree or shrub and water it in. This can be repeated in mid summer as well.

It’s also a good time to use Fertilome Tree and Shrub Drench to protect your trees from insects for the year. This product works well to protect your trees from types of borers, elm leaf beetles, aphids and many more. Mix this product with water and pour right around the base of the tree to protect your trees.

This time of year we talk a lot about preventing crabgrass, which is an annual grass that comes up from seed, usually around late May/early June. If you already have a weedy grass growing in your lawn, it’s not crabgrass, but most likely wild fescue. Wild fescue is wider bladed than your lawn and grows taller and faster than your lawn. It is a perennial grass that comes back from roots and there’s no way to prevent it. The best way to get rid of wild fescue is to spray it with Hi-Yield Killzall and reseed 2 weeks later.

We have a pretty good selection of perennial flowers in stock now. Onion and potato sets are starting to get low so if you want to plant those in your garden this year now would be a good time to pick some up.

Well after telling you last week we weren’t getting our trees in until late April, we got surprised by our largest order of trees showing up early. This order includes almost all of the fruit trees we will be getting this year...

Well after telling you last week we weren’t getting our trees in until late April, we got surprised by our largest order of trees showing up early. This order includes almost all of the fruit trees we will be getting this year. There’s quite a bit to choose from with 9 varieties of apple trees, 8 cherries, and 3 varieties each of peach, plum and apricot. The current forecast looks to be safe for planting trees, but if we get down below the mid 20’s for a night, covering them would protect the young buds. The trees can also be left in the pot and watered occasionally until ready to plant.

Along with the fruit trees we also received a lot of the most popular trees and shrubs for the area. Shrubs include Burning Bush, Snowball Bush and 6 different colors of Lilacs. Flowering crabapples, flowering pears, lindens, honeylocust, aspens and maples are some of the trees we have available now.

When planting trees or shrubs we recommend digging a hole about twice the size of the pot the plant came in. Then mix cotton burr compost 50/50 with the soil in your yard to fill the hole with after placing the tree. To finish, mix Fertilome Root Stimulator with water and pour it onto the roots of the plant. This will stimulate early root formation and stronger root development as well as helping to prevent transplant shock.

Now’s a good time to trim roses back. Cut your bush roses back to 6 inches above the ground and climbing roses to 3 feet. We have our mulches in stock now if you want to dress your rose and perennial beds up.

We are open on Monday’s again now until Memorial Day. Our Spring hours are 9-5 Monday-Saturday.

If you haven’t done so yet, now is a good time to fertilize the lawn. As always our favorite is Jirdon Greenmaster fertilizer. Formulated for our region, it is high in iron and sulfur which helps combat our alkaline soil conditions. It’s also high in nitrogen which will give your lawn a quick green up and start it growing. Water it in after spreading on the lawn.

Plants are starting to trickle in now. This year we have Eversweet Strawberries which are an everbearing variety that are great for our area. They produce large red sweet fruit in early summer and then continue to set fruit through fall. The best part is they tolerate temperatures over 100 degrees without affecting fruit quality. Strawberries are perennial and establishing a nice patch can produce fruit for many years.

Pansies are in and looking very colorful. They can be planted now and actually enjoy the cold. We have cool season veggies like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, as well as a few early season herb plants. Perennial flowers are starting to show up with more varieties expected every week.

Trees, shrubs and roses will NOT be here until late April.

Pre-emergent is a weed control product that prevents seeds from germinating. This product is great when trying to prevent weeds that come from seed, such as crabgrass, spurge and goatheads. It does not however prevent weeds that come back from roots, like bindweed. We have pre-emergent granules from Hi-Yield as well as one mixed with fertilizer that would be a great first application for your lawn. It’s a good idea to get your first application of pre-emergent down around the first of April. Just remember to re-apply it 60 days later to keep those weeds away.

Natural Guard Humic, the product formerly known as Activator is a great soil conditioner that helps break down organic matter such as lawn thatch. Humic increases nutrient uptake and lowers soil ph. It is an ideal soil conditioner for our area and can be applied anytime to lawns, flower beds, gardens or even trees.

The forecast looks like good grass seed planting temperatures. Loosen the top layer of soil, spread some seed and starter fertilizer, lightly cover with top soil or straw mulch and keep moist. With good weather conditions the grass will start sprouting in 2-3 weeks. We sell bulk seed so you can get as much or little as you need, whether you’re filling in bare spots or starting a new lawn.

We hope everyone has had a good winter and are as excited for Spring as we are. As the snowstorms last week reminded us, It’s still a little early to be thinking about tomatoes in the garden.

It is however a good time to start thinking about planting more frost tolerant plants in your veggie garden. Our onion sets, shallots, seed potatoes and asparagus crowns are all in stock now and can be planted anytime. We have red, white and yellow onion bulbs as well as Walla Walla and Candy Onion plants. Seed potato varieties include Golden Globe, Sangre Red and Rocky Mtn Russet. Plant onions and potatoes now for mid to late summer harvest. Our Mary Washington Asparagus crowns are 2 year old crowns, which will save you lots of time compared to seed. Asparagus shouldn’t be harvested until it’s third year so plant the crowns now for next year’s harvest.

There are also many veggies you can seed directly outside now, such as peas, carrots, radish, beets, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. We have a row cover called seed guard that can be used to blanket the seeds for added protection until they get established. By the end of the week, we should also have broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kale plants ready to go as well.

More tender plants that take a little longer to germinate like tomatoes and peppers can be started by seed indoors now. We are stocked up with seed, soil, planting trays, heat mats and grow lights.
